On March 23, the 5C Artists’ Coalition and the Pomona Student Union hosted an “Art in the Age of AI” talk at Claremont McKenna College’s Bauer Center. The talk began with a short presentation by Mark Allen, who provided context on the mechanisms of generative AI. For the duration of the talk, student moderator Maggie Zhang PO ’26 asked Stokes and the other panelists questions about the relationship between art and artificial intelligence across various contexts and academic disciplines.

Gazan poet Yahya Ashour reads and discusses poetry in the face of exile, displacement and violence
On Wednesday, March 11, students and faculty filtered into the Ena Thompson Room at Pomona College’s Crookshank Hall to listen to Palestinian poet and Pitzer visiting professor Yahya Ashour read a selection of his poems. Alongside stand-alone poems, he shared several from his e-book and manuscript, “A Gaza of Siege & Genocide.”
Robin D.G. Kelley discusses the rhetoric of music in incarceration and abolition
On Monday, March 2, the 5C Prison Abolition Collective (5C Pris Ab) hosted the “Sounds of Abolition” talk by UCLA professor Robin D.G. Kelley at Scripps’ Balch Auditorium. The talk launched a fundraising push for the April 10 Freedom First concert, featuring Keith LaMar, a spoken word artist on Ohio’s death row after the 1993 Lucasville Prison Uprising.

KSPC celebrates 70th anniversary of FM radio and 25th anniversary of online broadcasting
On Thursday, Feb. 12, KSPC — the 5Cs radio station— celebrated 70 years of FM broadcasting with an open house at their studio. KSPC was founded in 1956 with an important mission in mind — to provide a platform for new, local and underrepresented voices. Amid an era of rapid digitization, KSPC is a space of creative expression and diverges from the popular music played on repeat on larger streaming platforms.
Spotlighting local artists’ voices at the Benton’s annual ‘Over Here Claremont Zine Fest’
The second edition of the annual “Over Here Zine Fest” took place on Nov. 1 in the Benton Museum of Art’s outdoor courtyard. The event was co-hosted by Curious Publishing, a 100 percent artist-owned nonprofit organization that aims to celebrate the rich diaspora of the Inland Empire, womxn, BIPOC and queer artists. Samuel Signer, one of over 40 independent exhibitors, described the event as an opportunity for local artists to express themselves freely amid shifting political climates.

On Tuesday, Oct. 21, the Pomona College English department hosted a reading event featuring acclaimed writers and poets Hoa Nguyen, Renee Gladman and Eileen Myles, known for their feminist and experimental practices. For the writers, it was a chance to come together, sharing a space, collaborating ideas and creating connections.

Nochella and Kohoutek shake up the music scene at the 5Cs
As artists entered the main stage at Coachella in Indio, California, students at the 5Cs were celebrating music festivals of their own. Pomona’s Nochella and Pitzer’s Kohoutek made their annual return on April 12 and 19, respectively.
