The Los Angeles County Fire Department responded to a gas leak at the Claremont McKenna College (CMC) Sports Bowl in the afternoon on Aug. 27, prompting a temporary road closure on Claremont Boulevard between Foothill Boulevard and 6th Street. Less than 20 minutes later, The Claremont Colleges Services (TCCS) reported a lockdown at Claremont Graduate University (CGU).
The Claremont Colleges Services (TCCS) informed the community of the gas leak at 3:17 p.m., following up at 3:26 p.m. to say that the fire department was on the scene, and that Claremont Boulevard had reopened.
“While working on grading an area near the Sports Bowl at the Roberts Campus, the cap on the incoming gas service was inadvertently knocked off,” Alex Boekelheide, associate vice president of strategic communications & Marketin, elaborated on the incident in a statement to TSL. “The construction crew notified authorities immediately and the LA County fire department responded, along with the gas company, and very quickly replaced the cap.”
Drivers were temporarily redirected by Campus Safety at the time.

Just 13 minutes after TCCS announced that the fire department had fixed the gas leak, they notified the community that CGU was on lockdown, directing those on campus to steer clear of the area. It is not yet clear whether the two incidents are related.
CGU remained under lockdown for a little more than an hour, from 3:49 p.m. until 5:01 p.m, at which point TCCS reported that the community could “resume normal activities.”
