Amazon Labor Union President Chris Smalls, 5C union leaders speak on labor activism at ‘Americonned’ screening

The documentary “Americonned” screened at Pomona’s Rose Hills Theater on Feb. 29. Following the screening, a panel featuring Amazon Labor Union president and documentary subject Chris Smalls, director Sean Claffey and two local union organizers, Pomona dining hall worker Rolando Araiza and Pitzer dining hall worker José Ochoa, discussed workers’ rights and labor activism at the 5Cs and beyond. The documentary discusses Smalls’ success in establishing a grassroots movement and unionizing Amazon workers, fighting against a smear campaign and union-busting efforts from company executives. Smalls’ journey was situated in a broader context of income inequality.

‘A Collective Memoir:’ Pitzer class showcase spotlights Asian American identities

Hosted by the IMS Asian Americans in Media course at Pitzer College, students from the class curated “Asian Americans: A Collective Memoir”, a series of ten short films exploring Asian-American stories in April 5 in Benson. Consisting of a variety of different experiences, 5C students had the opportunity to view and celebrate representations of Asian identities as a community.

‘Does Context Matter?’ open dialogue broaches issues raised by Mo Amer’s show at Scripps

Pitzer professor Kouross Esmaeli along with his MS 124 students hosted “Does Context Matter?,” an open dialogue concerning Mo Amer’s usage of the N-word in his recent comedy show at Scripps. Many noted that the TSL opinion piece on the topicfailed to mention that Amer used the slur in reference to his oppression as a Middle Eastern person in America. Attendees sought to contemplate this issue as well as other related concerning the intersections of race and identity.
