The highlight of the Oct. 13 Associated Students of Harvey Mudd College (ASHMC) Council meeting was undoubtedly the crayons. Council members used them to sketch ideas for the plaque displaying HMC’s Honor Code that the Council wants to have mounted at the new Shanahan Center for Teaching and Learning.

The discussion focused largely on where the plaque should be placed to draw the most attention. Ideas for the Honor Code’s presentation included an engraving in addition to a plaque, or the use of vinyl lettering. The Council discussed changing the wording of the Honor Code to include the phrase “live and walk,” because students will be walking past the plaque. This raised the concern of excluding students who are unable to walk, which prompted a subsequent concern over nonliving, robotic students who might also take offense.

In other news, HMC Math Club President Jennifer Rogers HM ’16 and Secretary/Treasurer Yaxi Gao HM ’16 requested $800 in funding for various events including Math Club sing-alongs, on-campus speakers, and a trip to an applied math company in Los Angeles. The motion passed. The Council also passed a $750 budget request from Travis Beckman HM ’15, the leader of the Surfing Club, who wanted to take participants to an official surfing school.

“I just want kids to surf, man,” Beckman said.

The Council’s final discussion regarded the $12,000 ASHMC scholarship fund. Council members were concerned that should scholarships be awarded, money would be deducted from the receiving student’s financial aid package, effectively accomplishing very little. The Council considered sending a letter to the Office of Advancement regarding appropriate use of the funds.

As the meeting came to an end, ASHMC President Travis Athougies HM ’14 had to appeal to the Council members: “Pass the crayons back, guys.”
