CSWA affirms support for Starbucks union strike

On Nov. 13., Starbucks Workers United (SWU) initiated a strike against Starbucks. The Claremont Student Worker Alliance (CSWA) supports this fight and has made recent efforts to pressure Starbucks-affiliated stores on campus to terminate their contracts with the supplier.

OPINION: The anonymity epidemic rages on

In Trump’s America, the declining power of the media goes beyond pulled punches and undeserved praise intended to curry favor. Deportations, office raids and First Amendment suppression of journalists and activists is becoming the new norm. The brave response to intimidation, however, is not submission. Madeleine Farr PZ ’27 believes that for those with privilege, which includes most 5C students, our responsibility is to use our First Amendment rights to support the journalistic institutions that can speak truth to power. Therefore, we need to consent to interviews.

Students protest Starbucks at Pomona’s Café 47, business slows

On Thursday, Oct. 16, several Claremont and national labor organizing groups held a teach-in at the Motley Coffeehouse in response to Pomona College’s Café 47 switching their supplier from Peet’s Coffee to Starbucks Coffee.
The teach-in, titled “Why Starbucks?”promoted a petition to remove the corporation from Claremont campuses alongside nationwide anti-Starbucks movements, and encouraged the boycott of Café 47 and other Starbucks-supplied establishments across the 7Cs.

Small fire breaks out at CMC, no injuries

The Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a small fire in Marks Hall at Claremont McKenna College this morning. The fire activated the sprinkler system just before 8:00 a.m., and the fire department is still determining the fire’s cause.
