A Civil Rights Love Story: Medgar and Myrlie Evers
Joy-Ann Reid spoke at the Bridges Auditorium at Pomona College as part of her book tour for “Medgar and Myrlie: Medgar Evers and the Love Story That Awakened America.” Reid spoke about the legacy of civil rights leader Medgar Evers, known for his civil rights advocacy work and activism in Mississippi and his role in the Emmett Till case. Medgar and Myrlie’s relationship influenced their activist work. His assassination in 1963 by was a pivotal moment in the civil rights movement that drew outrage galvanized the March in Washington. Myrlie, who spoke as a surprise guest at the talk, is a notable civil rights figure and author, working tirelessly to seek justice for her husband and advocating for civil rights.
Celebrating Black Culture: Pitzer’s BSU hosts Second Black Flea Market
The Pitzer Black Student Union (BSU) Black Flea Market was held on Feb. 2, following its inaugural event in October. Located at Pitzer College, the market showcased a rich display of vibrant clothes, beauty products and handmade jewelry sold by Black-owned local vendors as well as student vendors. Music and dancing created a lively atmosphere.
John McWhorter on Wokeism and linguistic prescriptivism
John McWhorter, New York Times columnist and Columbia University linguistics professor, spoke at the Athenaeum on Jan. 26 about linguistic prescriptivism, a phenomenon in which people create terms like “Latinx” and “BIPOC.” He argued that such terms do not effectively produce social change.

Various jewelry, clothing and local food vendors surrounded the mounds at Pitzer College on the weekend of Oct. 7.. Music played all afternoon at the McConnell Apron, and the Claremont community came out to support the first ever Black Flea Market by Pitzer’s Black Student Union (BSU).
Los Tigres Del Norte Plays Free Concert in Pomona’s Fox Theatre
Two weeks before Hispanic Heritage Month began, fans from all over the Inland Empire and Los Angeles county lined up mid-day, getting ready to see one of the biggest Mexican Norteno bands live and for free. On September 8th 2023, Los Tigres Del Norte performed to a full house at Fox Theater.
