Meet TSL’s Spring 2026 editorial board

A new semester at the Claremont Colleges brings new leaders to the helm of TSL. Adam Akins PZ ’27, Claire Welch SC ’27 and Joelle Rudolf SC ’28 have officially taken the reins as the newspaper’s spring 2026 editorial board. Rudolf noted the importance of student journalism in a time when the press is under fire. She said she believes TSL has the ability to identify oppression — especially regarding institutions that need to be held accountable — and tell stories to address it.

5C community rallies following death of Diego Rios in police custody

5C students and community members gathered in front of Claremont City Hall last Saturday to rally for further investigation into the death of Diego Rios, who died in Claremont police custody last November.
On Jan. 20, the city released audio and footage from when police pulled over 30-year-old Rios, who was experiencing a mental health crisis. The video showed Claremont Police Department Corporal Benjamin Alba tase Rios, leaving him unresponsive.
Rios’ family is now seeking answers from Claremont City Council about a missing two minutes and 25 seconds from the body camera footage and an explanation as to why mental health professionals were not called to the scene.

SAS & PEC deliver a Halloween with renewed spirit

For the Claremont Colleges, Halloween is one of the most important nights of the year. Amidst midterms, it is a time for students to let loose and reward themselves after all-nighters and library lock-ins with a night out with friends. This year’s Halloween party was brought to us by Scripps Associated Students (SAS) and Pomona Events Committee (PEC). These students worked tirelessly to renew past traditions and rebuild trust with the student body through the promise of a perfect night.

Haunted Tiny Patio Concert: The Hive’s celebration of student creativity

The Haunted Tiny Patio Concert transformed the Hive into a Halloween haven last Friday, Oct. 24 — the second Hive fall concert this semester. A large Scream-themed Haunted Tiny Patio poster hung on the wall, framed by bat and pumpkin garlands, while an elaborate spread of Halloween-themed food and drinks greeted attendees. The concert invited student musicians to share their work in a warm, welcoming space — cheered on by friends and familiar faces. Reese Roseback PO ’25 and Salina Munoz CM ’23 run the series as part of their Experience Designer roles at the Hive.

Inside CLSA’s ‘Top Chef featuring Central American Cuisine’ pupusa-making workshop

On Oct. 16, The Claremont Colleges’ Chicano Latino Student Affairs office (CLSA) hosted a pupusa-making workshop titled “Top Chef featuring Central American Cuisine.” Students and faculty gathered around at Pitzer’s Demonstration Kitchen to learn from veteran pupusa-maker Shirley Polanco. For many attendees, Thursday’s workshop offered an opportunity to celebrate Salvadorian heritage and tradition.

Step into the studio: KSPC welcomes underrepresented voices with BIPOC mixer

Last Friday, Sept. 19, the Claremont Colleges’ radio station hosted a BIPOC mixer — the first of many events they plan to host this semester to further their reach on campus. From 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., current and prospective volunteers filtered in and out of the radio station for an afternoon of music and conversation.
