California State Senator Sasha Renée Pérez joined Pitzer College on Wednesday to host a ‘Town Hall on Civil Liberties and Freedom of Speech.’ Several students attended the town hall, a public meeting designed for local government officials to both inform and speak with local community members, which included a panel discussion and an audience Q&A session.
Pérez, who represents Claremont alongside the rest of District 25, moderated a panel consisting of five community members who are passionate about civil liberties, including 5C professors and civil liberty advocacy groups. The discussion spanned immigration laws, data privacy, surveillance technology, education and a call to action for college students.

Third ever Leftist Coffee Hour encourages unity among student activists
On Friday, Sept. 15, student activist organizations from across the 5Cs gathered at The Motley Coffeehouse for the third edition of the “Leftist Coffee Hour.” The Leftist Coffee Hour is an event featuring 15 different leftist-identifying student organizations, with representatives conducting presentations about their civic concerns, followed by a club showcase. The event enabled students to understand how to get politically engaged in issues such as environmental justice, prison abolition, affordable housing and more. Miranda Elder PO ’29, co-president of Inclusive Claremont, a club that advocates for affordable housing, echoed the importance of these gatherings, noting that one of the objectives of the Coffee Hour is creating an active community of progressive activists.
