Anyone who watched a Pomona-Pitzer football game last season or who even remotely considers themself a Sagecock fan should already know who Luke Sweeney PO ’13 is. If they don’t, they certainly will by the time this season is over. Listed as a generous 5’8″, the running back and captain of the 2011 team might not be the biggest guy on the field, but that doesn’t stop him from putting up 176 rushing yards in a game, as he did last Saturday against Whitworth University.

But what makes Luke tick? How does he get into the zone? What gets Sweeney pumped before a big game?

I sat down with the man himself to get to the bottom of some of these pressing issues.

“I like to have some quiet time before the game,” he said of his pre-field routine, “where I just have my music in, just kind of to myself, getting pumped up.”

But once Luke hits the grass with his teammates, it’s a completely different story. “Once I take the field, that quiet time is over, and it’s just time to fight. Then I try to be as loud and vocal as I can to get the team pumped up, get myself pumped up. It’s important to play with no fear, and you can’t do that if you’re afraid.”

To help him get in the zone, Luke listens to a lot of Wiz Khalifa, but his favorite pump-up song is “HAM” by Jay-Z and Kanye West.

“It’s hard as a m*$%#& f*&%$#, and that’s how we want to play this year,” he says of his jam.

In high school, he had a pre-game playlist that included Metallica, Kanye, and Kid Cudi, but now he mainly sticks to a repertoire of Taylor Gang with hints of Kanye and Cudi mixed in. When asked to name his favorite Taylor Gang song, Luke chose “Wake Up” off the new album Rolling Papers.

“It just gives more of a real view of young Khalifa, not so much all the partying, but what happens when he actually has to face waking up and dealing with life.”

After a game, Luke soaks in some more Taylor Gang to help him unwind, but he also listens to some rock, alternative rock, and a lot of rap. He highly recommends the new Red Hot Chili Peppers album I’m With You and still vouches for Blink-182.  After my discussion with the leading rusher of the P-P football team, I found one simple message to take away, a message we should always keep in mind: “Taylor Gang or Die.”
