The Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens lost to rivals CMS in the SCIAC championships Saturday night in heartbreaking fashion 57-53. At one point the Sagehens were down 55-45, but they came storming back behind stifling defense to make it 55-53 with 15 seconds left. The opportunity slipped through the Sagehens’ grasp as Colin Reinstadt PI ’10 lost the handle on a pass under the basket from David Liss PO ’10 with 5 seconds left.
The loss left the Sagehens’ senior heavy squad wanting more, especially since they had beaten the Stags twice previously. It also ended a dramatic run at the end of the season that had seen the Sagehens qualify for the tournament with wins over the top two teams in SCIAC. They followed that with a gutsy victory over Cal Lutheran in the semifinals, winning in double overtime despite having their top scorer, Justin Sexton PO ’10, foul out near the end of the first overtime.
