The Associated Students of Claremont McKenna College (ASCMC) Senate_x000D_
opened its Nov. 18 meeting with leaders of Under the Lights, Common Sense Action, the_x000D_
Claremont Government Society, and the Senior Women’s Forum pitching their clubs’ activities and reminding all present that good times do exist beyond those listed in the Party_x000D_
Inform. Filling in temporarily for Administrative and Budgetary Committee Chair_x000D_
Aviv Caspi CM ’16, President Pro Tempore Michael Irvine CM ’16 introduced a funding request for TEDxClaremontColleges. Although $1,500 was requested, the committee voted 7-0 to provide $1,000, anticipating that the organizers will find other revenue sources for which they have not yet accounted. There was concern about the vagueness of the projected expenses and the_x000D_
possibility of running out of Senate funds if big funding requests keep getting_x000D_
approved. Motions to reduce the amount funded to $500 and $750 were both_x000D_
seconded, but ultimately the full amount of $1,000 was approved with a vote of 54 percent for $1,000, 34 percent for $750, 10 percent for $500, and two percent for not funding the event at all.

After_x000D_
senators admired ASCMC’s new website layout and discussed potential_x000D_
topics for a new speaker series, CMC President Hiram Chodosh made an appearance to_x000D_
discuss the increasing polarization in the conversation about alcohol and_x000D_
campus culture. He encouraged indignant students to contact him directly with_x000D_
their criticisms, and introduced his plan to establish a permanent committee to_x000D_
address ongoing conversations about substance use, sexual assault, academic_x000D_
integrity, and student identity. Quoting former U.S. Senator George Mitchell, Chodosh reiterated that_x000D_
leadership was about the “reconciliation of divergent forces in society,” and_x000D_
emphasized the importance of balancing freedom and safety.
