After some talk about turning a residence hall suite into a nation (population: 3; official languages: English, MATLAB, Python; primary exports: physics, computer code), Associated Students of Harvey Mudd College (ASHMC) President Travis Athougies HM ’14 began the official discussion about where a plaque bearing the HMC Honor Code could be placed. In true HMC style, somebody decided to list systematically all of the possibilities on a whiteboard: “cafe, pillars by cafe, wall near admission, 2nd floor wall, 3rd floor wall, not do it.”
The Council then almost unanimously approved a measure to provide $100 for raffle prizes to promote ASHMC’s social media presence through the ASHMC Social Media Committee. There were no dissensions, and the only two abstentions came from Committee for Activities Planning member David Scott HM ’14 and ASHMC Vice President Josh Edelman HM ’14, who were grinning at their phone and tablet respectively as the vote was called.
Afterward, the Council discussed the mechanics of residence hall elections after an incident in which Linde Hall’s incumbent presidents failed to solicit alternate nominations from their residence hall before conducting the election. The meeting ended on a positive note, most likely because the Council had a particularly short agenda and members were able to get to dinner by 5 p.m.
