Do-Be-Do Nothing

_x000D_

For last week’s Senate meeting check-in question, Associated Students of Pomona College (ASPC) President Sarah Appelbaum PO ’13 posed the question: who would you “do-be-do?” For those of you who have never heard the phrase before, “do-be-do” refers to someone (usually a fictional character) that one would either do [1] or be [2],  but they can’t decide which. Commissioner of Academic Affairs Quinn Lester PO ’13 won the round with his answer: “The Count of Monte Cristo, because he combines my love of power, money, and brooding,” but ultimately everyone lost 11 minutes of their lives by the time the meeting started.

At the (delayed) start of the meeting, President Appelbaum informed the Senate that current discussions with the higher-ups about installing a Plan-B vending machine on campus had somewhat stalled. Apparently, they’re in need of a backup plan now [3].

Budget ain’t Budgin’

_x000D_

As you might recall, a few weeks back, the ASPC Senate kinda-sorta voted to publish their budget for everyone’s reading pleasure, but as of late, not much has happened on that front. Commissioner of Communications Trevor Smith PO ’15 told the Senate that he’s still waiting to receive the information he needs before he can publish anything. Part of that information is the data from the budget charts published on the ASPC website [4] last year, which were designed by then Junior Class President Drew DiPalma PO ’13, who is no longer on Senate [5]. Seeing as the odds of the current Senate contacting Mr. DiPalma for this information are little to none, I present this brief PSA: YO DREW THEY NEED YOUR DIGITS. HELP ‘EM OUT OR THIS IS GONNA TAKE A YEAR.

How to Train a Senator

_x000D_

Commissioner of Communications Trevor Smith PO ’15 gave a brief demonstration to the Senate of how to use their brand new website [6] and all the functions it provides. Wait, no, the website has been up for a while, but this was the first time they explained how to use it. Senators were excited to discover that they had the abilities to make blog posts, archive documents, and access meeting minutes, but they were disappointed when they found that the website did not allow them to Tweet from @NotASPCSenate’s account.

Divestment

_x000D_

Commissioner of Environmental Affairs Lena Connor PO ’13 presented a potential resolution concerning divestment for the Senate to consider passing. According to Connor, it was more of a “fossil-fuel” resolution rather than a divestment resolution because, while it addresses divestment, it also pushes for the creation of a “green revolving fund” and for Pomona College President David Oxtoby to set a date for the college to become carbon neutral. During the following 45 minutes’ worth of discussion, Lester brought up the very good point that we’re all going to be dead in a hundred years anyway, and, really, “What is the obligation of this body to future generations of students?”

Ultimately, the Senate did not vote on the resolution but did vote to put a referendum of the same nature on the April 9 ballot [7] for students to vote on, promoting the radical idea of getting representatives in touch with their constituents. On the positive side, Commissioner of Clubs and Sports Emma Wolfarth PO ‘14 finally discovered loopholes in Roberts Rules [8] to cut through discussion time and get straight to a vote. While Wolfarth was excited about this finding, other senators were worried that it might lead to her actually getting things done in the future.

8. The rules by which Senate meetings are conducted. Weird to have a serious footnote. Never doing this again.
