Scripps Ranked as a Most Beautiful Campus

Scripps College was named the fourth most beautiful college in the world by Forbes magazine earlier this month, after Kenyon College, Oxford University and Princeton University.

The magazine cited the “artistic connection between buildings and landscape” at Scripps, calling it “distinctly Southern Californian.”

The Forbes list included colleges already well-known for their beauty—such as Stanford and Princeton—as well as campuses less famous for it, like that of the University of Cincinnati. All different styles of architecture, from Scripps’ Mission Revival to Princeton’s Collegiate Gothic to the United States Air Force Academy’s modernism, were honored.

Ten of the 14 picks were in the United States and of those, three were in California.

Scripps students did not seem surprised that their campus was chosen. They pointed out the beauty of several campus locations, including Denison Library, the rose garden, and the pool.

“My favorite part of campus is the Margaret Fowler Garden,” said Christine Zenel SC ’14. “It’s so peaceful there.”

Kamyn Asher SC ’14 said she enjoys seeing the senior class graffiti on the rose garden walls.

“There’s so much history there,” she said. “It’s really cool to see that.”

Lindsey Cook SC ’11 also agreed that part of the attraction of Scripps is the sense of history on campus.

“I can still remember the first moment I stepped onto Scripps’s campus as a prospective student … and feeling the presence of all the women that had gone before,” she said.
