Scripps’ Hao Huang Brings Artful Harmonies to Balch Auditorium

Scripps College’s Balch Auditorium was illuminated Oct. 10 by a grand piano and its master. Music Professor Hao Huang performed for students and faculty members as part of the Friday Noon Concert series, a weekly event sponsored by the joint music program of Scripps, Claremont McKenna, Harvey Mudd and Pitzer Colleges. Huang, the Bessie and Cecil Frankel Endowed Chair in Music, opened the afternoon with Fryderyk
Franciszek Chopin’s Piano Sonata No. 3, a cheerful piece with captivating harmonies, and concluded with Louis Moreau Gottschalk’s Bamboula. Huang’s artful notes alternated between delicate and powerful, keeping the audience engrossed in his every move. “He kept me at the edge of my seat for most of the concert,” Francesca Inocentes SC ’17 said. “Each of the four movements had its own style, and of course, my favorite part was the fast runs towards the end of the last movement. I was at a loss for words when I heard Professor Huang play.”
