Maximize Your Fall Break with Local Options

Today marks the (unofficial) beginning of fall break, and for many of you, a flurry of planes, trains, and automobiles will be taking you far away from dear old Claremont. Yet for those of you who are staying on campus, celebrate those few extra days of freedom and indulge in the local events—some bizarre, some funky, all exciting—detailed below.

“Get Lost” at the Big Horse Corn Maze & Harvest Festival at Big Horse Feed & Mercantile in Temecula, CA. Venture through the 13-acre maze, created from seven-foot corn stalks, with a directionally-inclined group of friends. This year’s theme is “We The People…” The maze itself is a partial model of the Constitution, and visitors receive a one-dollar discount for wearing red, white, and blue. Additional activities include wagon rides, a corn cannon, pony rides, pig races, pumpkin bowling, and face painting. The festival is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. More information and directions can be found athttp://bighorsecornmaze.com/.

Enjoy free live music on Saturday from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Downtown Street Jam in Riverside. Country western recording artist Austin Law headlines along with Back Home, United Blues Band, and The Buzz Jumpers. Also check out the array of artisan vendors on University Avenue, the inflatable jumper, and “pirate activities” with the Port Royal Puppeteers. Watch an American Fusion Bellydance performance at Bruce’s Prime Rib Restaurant in Santa Fe Springs, CA on Sunday evening at 5 p.m. Artist Sat Prem will be combining bellydance with flagging, the rhythmic spinning and waving of flags. No cover charge or reservations are necessary. Find more information athttp://www.meetup.com/flagging/calendar/14961152/.

For those over 21, purchase tickets for the California Beer Festival, which arrives at 1st Street and Indian Hill Boulevard in the Claremont Village on Saturday. Proceeds for the event benefit the Dyslexia Awareness and Resource Center and will be used to help children in Claremont who struggle with learning disabilities. The entry price covers the cost of beer samples, food from Casablanca Bar & Grill and Smokey’s BBQ House, and live music from Rey Fresco, Orlando Napier, The Dogs, and The Blue Baron Band. The festival lasts from 12:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. Tickets may be purchased at the door and athttp://www.californiabeerfestival.com/claremont.html.
