Girls in Lifting and Fitness makes a safe space for women and gender nonconforming people out of the masculine wasteland of the gym

Say goodbye to intimidating gym bros and cardio-only workouts (unless you’re into that). Girls in Lifting and Fitness (GILFs) holds four weekly sessions for 5C women and gender nonconforming students to experience the positive side of exercise without the too-often seen negatives.

“Our main focus is kind of demystifying the gym as this space for men and masculine figures,” Sam Machin PO ’24 said. “And so we really just want to work on making the gym less intimidating, having more information about what each machine does, proper form and what that looks like, and how to work as a group.”

‘A safe space to make jokes’: Black Comic Cultures Stand-Up Showcase brings students to the stage

Laughter poured from Pomona College’s Allen Theatre last Tuesday, April 18, as students huddled into the packed room, finding seats in chairs or room on the floor, to see the Black Comic Cultures Stand-Up Showcase. Organized by a Pomona Africana Studies class “Black Comic Cultures” students had the chance to share their own stand-up comedy routine to a large audience.

Off-campus gym outside the Claremont bubble offers students ‘inclusive fitness’

Between Roberts, the new Pomona-Pitzer gym, Tiernan, the Pitzer pool and the Harvey Mudd gym that no one knows exists, choosing a workout space can be overwhelming. Fit Rituals, a small local gym space, has provided 5C students with the opportunity to workout in an environment completely removed from the college atmosphere.

Pomona Black Student Union pushes for full-time room dedicated to Black students

Last month, Pomona College granted the Black Student Union’s request for Black students to have their own designated room on campus with the caveat that the room would only be theirs after 7 p.m. In response, the BSU is calling for that room to be available “full time.”
