Harvard & Yale brings the ‘retail coffee experience’ to Claremont

Harvard & Yale, which opened its pop-up location on February 16th in the Claremont Village, has grand aspirations for the future. The newest addition to the Village combines the retail and coffee shop experiences.

The second edition of the annual “Over Here Zine Fest” took place on Nov. 1 in the Benton Museum of Art’s outdoor courtyard. The event was co-hosted by Curious Publishing, a 100 percent artist-owned nonprofit organization that aims to celebrate the rich diaspora of the Inland Empire, womxn, BIPOC and queer artists.

Samuel Signer, one of over 40 independent exhibitors, described the event as an opportunity for local artists to express themselves freely amid shifting political climates.
“I think it’s really powerful just to show how many people are using art to just speak their own voice, speak their own truth, give power to narratives that are otherwise very much marginalized by more traditional formats and institutions,” Signer said.

Many attendees, like Sage Santomenna PO ’26, expressed their appreciation for access to events like this on campus.
“I think that one of the benefits of being at Claremont, regardless of what you study, is that there’s this incredible set of opportunities that kind of present themselves to engage in art, to engage with local creatives, that happens to be very convenient for you by virtue of going to the colleges,” Santomenna said.

A stream of sequin-sparkling, fishnet-clad, costume-adorned students eagerly gathered outside of Pitzer’s Benson Theatre on Oct. 30, awaiting the first of two consecutive 5C productions of “The Rocky Horror Picture Show.”

“I really love the unapologetic celebration of queerness that ‘Rocky Horror’ has,” Spencer Stoller SC ’27, who played Frank N. Furter, said. “There’s so much gender bending and fluidity in the show that I don’t really see that often in any kind of media.”

The show not only fostered feelings of community amongst the audience, but also within the cast, who cited the foundation of community as one of their strongest reasons for joining the production. Multiple members touched on the show’s ability to bring together students who would not otherwise overlap. The show’s weirdness has created an international community of fans who bond over their love for queer expression and its bizarre portrayal within the story.

“It’s so androgynous, and it’s inspiring to see that level of ambiguity with gender,” attendee Katisyn Sweeney SC ’26 said. “Every time I’ve seen it, it’s inspired me in some way to explore deeper into my gender identity. It’s queer and I love it.”

For the Claremont Colleges, Halloween is one of the most important nights of the year. Amidst midterms, it is a time for students to let loose and reward themselves after all-nighters and library lock-ins with a night out with friends.

This year’s Halloween party was brought to us by Scripps Associated Students (SAS) and Pomona Events Committee (PEC). These students worked tirelessly to renew past traditions and rebuild trust with the student body through the promise of a perfect night.

“To get to stand at the back of the crowd and just watch everyone sharing the joy — it feels so special,” Evelyn Cantwell SC ’28, SAS 5C Event Co-chair, said. “Those are memories being made, and knowing I have a role in bringing people together to make them is beyond rewarding.”

From the night of Halloween, Oct. 31 to Nov. 2, “Collective Rage: A Play in 5 Betties” ran for a total of three shows at the Large Studio of Pomona College’s Seaver Theatre Complex.

The production follows the titular Bettys — five different women who share the same name, but couldn’t be more different from each other — as they navigate the challenges of womanhood and figuring out who they are.
The broader messages about identity and empathizing with others resonated with many in the audience, with some considering how they can apply these lessons into their own lives.

“The show itself was very real, and it helped me realize that I should be out of my comfort zone,” attendee Peter Zhang PO ’29 said. “I should learn about how others learn and communicate, and this is a really good way to help one grow and find a lot more about themselves that they didn’t know before.”

Mexico’s leading party, the Movimiento de Regeneración Nacional (Morena), has shown itself to be the real deal: It has captured a decisive majority of the working class vote in a country known for its role as the factory of the Americas. But unlike the Republican’s successful yet unfounded popularity among workers, Morena is leftist, and pragmatist, as the day is long. The party’s focus on predistributive policies has leapfrogged the ideology of American liberals, stuck on tax reforms that ultimately uphold the neoliberal system that stabs workers in the back, and changed the lives of millions of workers. So why don’t we follow suit?

“Morena has implemented policies consistent with its left-wing label, most notably a massive increase in the minimum wage,” Rafael Hernandez Guerrero PZ ‘29 writes. “The same cannot be said of the Democratic Party in the United States. Progressives in the United States should not necessarily adopt predistributive policies in the exact same manner as Morena, since labor markets in Mexico are unique. Nonetheless, the popularity of predistribution is noteworthy.”

In an AI video posted by President Donald Trump to Truth Social, “Trump Gaza” imagines beaches and skyscrapers rising from ruins.: Trump’s proposed “GREAT” plan recasts Gaza’s destruction as an opportunity for profit, inviting the same powers complicit in its devastation to rebuild it while further displacing Palestinian populations and causing even greater environmental harm beyond that already caused by the war.

Leili Kamali PO ‘29 argues that current plans for reconstruction are dangerously colonialist and anti-environmentalist, and must be reimagined in order to make proper reparations for those living in Gaza.

“Rebuilding cannot be entrusted to those who have treated Gaza’s people and environment as expendable,” Kamali writes.

Once meant to empower us, AI culture now glamorizes shortcuts and academic dishonesty — turning human creativity into an afterthought. AI startup companies like Cluely have unfortunately transformed AI from a tool of innovation into an inescapable condition of our ever-demanding world whose marketing normalizes and even necessitates cheating on anything and everything.

“Laziness is being repackaged by these companies as ‘efficiency,’ and our skills that make us all individually human are being forfeited and devalued,” writes Ansley Kang SC ‘29. Kang argues that we must work to revalue individualistic traits in our work, for the sake of it being meaningful and formative.
