The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team (17-7 SCIAC) swept the Pomona-Pitzer softball team (6-18 SCIAC) this past weekend to take the season series 3-1. The Athenas were boosted by their great pitching, as they only gave up one run in 14 innings. That number proved crucial in the the first game as they squeaked out a 1-0 win. In game two, their offense came alive and helped secure a 5-1 victory.
In the first game, Anna Gurr CM ’18 recorded her 12th win of the season in a 7-hit complete game shutout. She managed to strike out five, while only walking one. Continuing in the spirit of strong individual performances, Chloe Amarilla CM ’19 scored the only run for CMS when she homered off of P-P pitcher Liz Rodarte PZ ’19.
Rodarte had an impressive stat line in her own right, only giving up four hits and adding two as a batter, but the homer would be her downfall.
Looking to get a better result in the second game, the Sagehens came out in the first inning with a double and managed to get a runner to third, but they still could not manage to score. The Athenas, on the other hand, put up two runs in the second, which gave them some breathing room going forward. They made use of some good small ball tactics, sacrifice bunting a runner into scoring position. A two-out single by Kylie Hetzel CM ’20 drove in the two runs.
Amarilla had the mound this game and was able to keep up with her teammate Gurr. She faced 26 batters over seven innings and only gave up four hits. She did give up a run in her last inning, but it did not do much more than take away her shutout.
At the plate, Alison Jue CM ’20 and Andre Troutman CM ’19 recorded the other two Athena RBIs, in addition to Hetzel’s three. Troutman leads the team with 17 RBIs on the season, putting her high up in the SCIAC rankings.
This is the fourth year in a row that the Athenas have gotten the best of the Sagehens in the four games they play against each other. The wins got CMS back on track after losing two games in a row. Before entering into the SCIAC postseason, they will have one more weekend of games against Cal Lutheran University and Chapman University.
