The Pomona-Pitzer men’s and women’s track teams wrapped up their regular seasons this past weekend at home in spectacular fashion. The women swept their four meets against University of La Verne, Chapman University, Whittier College, and California Institute of Technology, winning by more than 100 points against Caltech and Chapman, and still defeating Whittier and La Verne by an impressive margin.
The men won three out of four multi-dual meets against the same teams. In their fourth matchup versus La Verne, they lost by a single point.
There were a lot of stand-out performances, but Abby Gardner PO ’17 and the men’s 4×400 relay team were particularly impressive. Gardner broke her P-P record in the steeplechase with a time of 11:21:69. Ryan Abele PO ’18, Cal Neikirk PO ’19, Paul Messana PZ ’17, and Nick Vucovich PO ’18 posted the 7th fastest time on the Sagehen’s All-Time list in the 4×400 relay at 3:17:21.
On the field, Katherine Pelz PO ’20 won the discus and hammer with respective throws of 112-01 and 133-02. Prisca Diala PO ’18 won the long jump with a leap of 18-00.25 and came in second in the triple jump with 33-10.00. Jessica Finn PO ’18 also won the javelin with a throw of 134-01.
Calvin Aylward PO ’18 won the javelin for the men as well with a throw of 206-09, and Lucas White Moon PO ’20 finished third in both the triple and long jump. Other winners included Neikirk in the 100 and 400 hurdles, Charlie Watson PO ’17 in the 5000-meter, and Danny Rosen PO ’20 in the 800-meter.
The women’s 4×400 team, consisting of Amy Watt PO ’20, Katrina Dank PO ’20, Lia Frances PO ’20, and Cat Bonobi PO ’17, also won with a time of 4:08.62, and Bonobi had her own individual victory in the 400-meter with a time of 58.97.
It was a particularly sweet victory for both teams, as it was Senior Day. Before the meet, all twelve seniors were honored.
Up next for the Sagehens is the SCIAC Championship meet. They are hosting this year on April 28 and April 29. When asked about how this past weekend’s performance helps the team moving forward, women’s head coach Kirk Reynolds said, “This gives us great momentum heading into the SCIAC Championships in two weeks.” No doubt they will be looking to unseat their neighbors and rivals as men and women’s conference champions.
