In the unexpected pause in the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps tennis season due to a rainout on Saturday, Apr. 9, it’s time for a brief season overview.
The No. 3 Stags (18-2, 4-0 SCIAC) have played through a largely loss-free season, having won sixteen out of eighteen matches. They’ve only lost to Bowdoin College (10-0, 4-0 Conf.) and Emory University (14-3, 0-0 Conf.), and the matches they have won, they’ve won definitively: each time, they’ve beat their opponents by three points or more. Their collection of victories include wins against Division I University of Connecticut (6-18, 0-3 Conf.), Division III University of Texas Tyler (14-7), and Division III Trinity University (13-9, 0-0 Conf.) in San Antonio, Texas.
This past week, Daniel Morkovine CM ’17, Bryan Mehall HM ’16, Alex Brenner CM ’17, and Skyler Butts CM ’16 have been particular stand-outs in three straight defeats of top ten teams. Morkovine won three matches against Middlebury College (9-2, 5-0 Conf.). That same morning, Mehall and Brenner paired up in doubles for a victory and followed that up with success in singles against California Lutheran (2-11, 1-3 SCIAC). The match before, Butts became the leader in all-time career singles with his 112th victory against Pomona-Pitzer (10-8, 2-1 SCIAC).
The Stags play next at Redlands University (14-4, 3-0 SCIAC) on Friday, Apr. 15.
