CMS Softball Tames Tigers Over Weekend

On Saturday, Apr. 2, the thunder crack of softball bats and emphatic cheers of the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team (22-5-1, 15-1 SCIAC) ricocheted around Athena Field to propel CMS to victory.

This past weekend, the team completed two shutouts against Occidental College: The Athenas won both games 6-0, proving once again that natural talent combined with hard work is a match made in heaven.

In the first game against Oxy, the game was scoreless into the fourth inning. Tension began to grow between the teams as the game continued, and soon the Athenas rallied. Briana Halle CM '18 brought her bat to life to smack a double to left center, which knocked in teammates Elaine Wang CM '18 and Katie Savard CM '16. Carlene Roberts CM '16 followed Halle’s lead, singling down the left-hand side, allowing Wang to score.

Sarah Whitney CM '18 also scored on a throwing error by the Occidental catcher. Then, in the top of the sixth inning, Tara Robinson CM '16 hustled to reach first, and a throwing error by the shortstop allowed teammates Reeve Grobecker CM '19 and Janelle Shiozaki CM '16 to score. Robecker wrapped up their first victory by doubling to right center, which allowed teammate Abigail Metsch SC '19 to score the sixth and final run.

In the second game, the Athenas didn’t wait to assert their dominance. They had a six-run second inning during which Wang, Grobecker, Robinson, Savard, Victoria Huynh CM '19, and Shannon O’Neill CM '16 all scored off solid contact and sacrifice flies, as well as capitalization on Oxy errors.

After that, the game dribbled onward until the Athenas emerged victorious at the final buzzer, a definitive ending to a vigorous performance by CMS. Once again, the team made their presence known in the conference, taking a step closer to a SCIAC championship.

The Athenas next play on Saturday, Apr. 9 at University of La Verne (17-9, 13-3 SCIAC).
