The Pomona-Pitzer volleyball team lost to Occidental in three sets last Friday night. The Sagehens fell behind early in the first set and were unable to close the gap, losing 25-17. Their play improved as the match went on, but Occidental was able to take the next two sets 25-17 and 25-23. With the loss, the Sagehens fell to 5-12 on the season, 3-5 in the SCIAC.
Offense was a problem spot for the Sagehens, as they managed just 27 kills on the night, only two of which came in the first set. In contrast, Occidental had only eight errors the whole night. As the Sagehens stepped up their game so did Oxy; their .385 hitting percentage in the third set was their highest of the game.
Setter Kenzie Aries PZ ’12 led the Sagehens with 16 assists, and libero Heidi Leonard PO ’12 had 21 digs. The Sagehens were unable to record a block against Occidental’s high-powered attack.
The loss dropped the Sagehens into fifth place in the SCIAC, two games behind CMS. The Sagehens will resume play Wednesday night when they travel to Chapman for a non-conference game.
