Men’s Tennis Breaks into National Top Ten

Now halfway through its season, the Pomona-Pitzer men’s tennis team has broken into the top ten teams in the nation. After a solid set of matches over spring break, including a victory over #11 Trinity (Tex.), the Sagehens have achieved a ranking of #9 nationally. On Tuesday the Hens pulled off a huge 5-4 win over #10 Williams College to secure their place as one of the top teams in Division-III tennis.

The match against Trinity, part of the Stag-Hen Invitational co-hosted by Pomona-Pitzer and CMS, was tied at four matches apiece until Alex Groth PO ’12 pulled through in a third set tiebreak victory. With the entire team cheering him on, Groth was able to clinch the victory 5-4 for the Hens.

“Being the last one on the court with the match on the line was an exhilarating experience,” Groth said. “While I happened to be the last match on, I was not the only reason we won. Everyone had an equal contribution and I was just happy to have the chance to do my part with everyone else there supporting.”
