Lacrosse Starts Season with High Hopes

Sagehens set sights on SCIAC Championship after semi-final loss last year

This year’s Pomona-Pitzer women’s lacrosse team looks to pick up where they left off last postseason. After ousting Occidental in the SCIAC tournament, the #4 seeded Sagehens lost a heartbreaker to rival CMS in the semi-finals. This team showed moments of greatness last year, demonstrating their potential by beating SCIAC powerhouse Redlands during the regular season. Coach Katherine Shannon hopes to have similar successes this year and expects the team “to be a real contender in the SCIAC league and to be able to compete both inside and outside of our league.”

With hopes of making the SCIAC tournament finals, the Sagehens are looking for another great season out of Martha Marich PO ’12. Last year, Marich led all Division III scorers with an astounding 113 goals. Also look out for Hannah T’Kindt PO ’11, the only senior on the team, who will provide leadership and direction to the young Sagehens as team captain.

“We are young, but we have very talented freshmen,” Coach Shannon said. The Hens have only eight returning players, but this season they welcome nine talented and motivated freshmen who will make a real difference on the field. Midfielder Logan Galansky PO ’14 opened the season last Saturday at Whittier College with three goals in her debut. Coach Shannon has nothing but confidence in Galansky, and she expects her to play an important role on the team.

Against the Whittier Poets, the Sagehens’ youth continued to shine. Sophomore Emma Molloy PZ ’13 netted four goals, already building off of her standout freshman year. Marich matched Molloy with four goals of her own. Unfortunately, the Poets’ efficient shooting—they scored on 10 of their 21 shots in the second half—erased the 8-6 Pomona-Pitzer halftime lead.

Despite the 16-11 loss, the team remains very optimistic about the season that lies ahead. They bounced back win an 18-9 win over Widener University on Wednesday, and they will take on Emerson College at home on Tuesday night.
