Despite Strong Offense, Football Comes Up Short

The Pomona-Pitzer football team knew their running game would be the key to success going into their first game of the season. Running the ball 58 times for 196 yards, the Sagehen offense certainly played well enough to win the game. Unfortunately for P-P, the Whitworth Pirates came up with big plays when they were needed to pull out a 34-7 victory.

The Pirates’s defense set the tone for the game early on, stopping the P-P opening drive at the eight-yard line, the closest the Sagehens would get to the end zone until the fourth quarter. Luke Sweeney PO ’13 paced the Sagehen offense with an impressive 176 yards rushing on 41 carries. Quarterback Luke Ferguson PO ’13 scored the only P-P touchdown of the game when he powered his way into the end zone from the one-yard line late in the fourth quarter.

It was a tough first game, but the Sagehens hope to get their season going on the right foot this Saturday at 1:00 p.m. when they square off against Lewis and Clark in their first home game of the year.
