In the second installment of her “Off the Shelf” column, Corina Yi PO ’28 reviews K-Ming Chang’s short story collection “Gods of Want.” Featuring cigarette-ad models coming to life, ghost-cousins, shape-shifting daughters, various nameless widows and nine-headed birds, the collection blurs the line between realism and fantasy.
“During a panel I attended earlier in the summer, Chang described her work as a function of ‘inauthentic storytelling’ — the idea that fiction shouldn’t have to function as authentic testimony,” Yi writes. “It made me think: How do we even define the Asian American experience [in fiction]?”
In this installment, Yi reminds us that our first-year roommates — whether they become close friends or not — can make great recommendations.
