CMS Men’s Track Ban Lifted Early
Members of the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men’s track team are set to compete at the SCIAC Multi-Dual meet at Chapman University Saturday according to students on the team, despite initially being barred from competing this week.
The athletes were banned from three meets following an investigation of alleged violations of CMS hazing policy. The Multi Dual meet was set to be the third and final competition for which the athletes were suspended.
It is unclear what caused the lifting of the ban; CMS athletic director Terrance Tumey declined to comment on the matter.
CMC Classifies Economics As STEM Major To Aid International Students
Claremont McKenna College is reclassifying its economics major as a STEM field, according to an email sent to CMC students who have F-1 immigration status. This follows a similar move by Pomona College last semester.
The change allows international student economics majors to apply for a two-year extension of Optional Practical Training, a program that generally allows international students to work in the U.S. without sponsorship for one year following graduation.
“I think you are going to see a wave of departments across the country [make the change],” Pomona College economics department chair Michael Kuehlwein said when Pomona reclassified the major.
Pitzer To Use Student Initiative Fund For Assorted Projects
As part of Pitzer College Student Senate’s Student Initiative Fund project, a “state-of-the-art” hammock structure will be constructed between East and West Residence Halls, a new hammock will be installed on the Mounds, a boxing area will be added to the gym, and bike accessories will be added to the gear closet within a few weeks, SIF committee member Isaiah Kramer PZ ’20 wrote in an email to students.
The SIF also has tentative approval for a pool table, lights for Pitzer’s volleyball court, and a half pipe.
Pitzer Student Senate Approves R&B Festival
At the Feb. 25 meeting, Pitzer Student Senate approved a $12,000 funding request from events board chair Elijah Pantoja PZ ’18 to establish an R&B festival, according to senate minutes. Events board is also seeking additional funding from other sources.
ASCMC To Fund Charity Event
ASCMC’s class presidents are working to combine a charity event with McKenna Palooza, an upcoming campus music festival, they announced at the Feb. 11 executive board meeting, according to ASCMC minutes. Each class will provide $1,000 to fund the event.
ASPC Launches Search For New Dean Of Students
ASPC will be announcing two student representatives selected for the Dean of Students search committee to replace former Dean of Students Miriam Feldblum Friday. The full committee will consist of nine members from the Pomona community, according to Feb. 20 minutes.
ASPC may also reschedule its regular meetings to Fridays.
