The Programming Board meeting of the Oct. 27 Scripps Associated Students (SAS) meeting focused on planning Eurotrash, Scripps College’s first big 5C party of the year. If you, like Interim Vice President for Student Affairs Nathalie Rachlin, are wondering “Why Eurotrash?” SAS President Marta Bean SC ’14 was quick to reassure all students and faculty present that the party is meant to mimic a discothèque, not to offend all of Europe.

The Executive Board then discussed the college’s cheek-swab program. With just 30 seconds and a painless cheek swab that the college is planning to offer this semester, students will be able to put their bone marrow type on file with a health organization that could then contact matches to ask them for potentially life-saving donations of bone marrow. Campus Activities Chair Lauren Halberg SC ’15 has not approved offering swabs at Snack, but it is a possibility.

SAS went over a recent meeting of 5C student body presidents as well. One of the hottest topics discussed was an upcoming “Wellness Machine” to be implemented at Pomona College. Although many of the details are still up in the air, the dispensary will offer the emergency contraceptive Plan B and specialty condoms, among other contraceptives. It will likely be installed, pending budgeting issues, in Walker Lounge Spring 2014.*

After the success of the last Be Heard forum (see the Oct. 18 issue of TSL), Vice President Alex Frumkin SC ’15 said that she hopes to hold a meeting of students from Claremont McKenna College, Harvey Mudd College, and Scripps to discuss sexual assault on campus. Feedback from the class of 2017 suggested that students would prefer having a peer talk to them about the subject during orientation, as two hours of a middle-aged woman talking about assault in Irvine does not lend itself easily to dialogue among Claremont students.
