The Scripps Associated Students (SAS) Executive Board and Programming Board held a joint meeting Sept. 29. A prominent item on the agenda was an e-mail from Associated Students of Claremont McKenna College President Gavin Landgraf CM ’14 concerning restricted pool hours at the Sallie Tiernan Field House for men and other students outside of Scripps College. In a valiant campaign against the oppressive Scripps matriarchy, Landgraf asserted his right to sunbathe beside the pool at all hours. SAS President Marta Bean SC ’14 asked the Boards whether they thought SAS should send out another survey about the pool hours and was met with a resounding no. Student Activities Chair Francesca Simmons SC ’14 pointed out that SAS does not have the power to change pool hours anyway. After First-Year Representative Anna Cechony SC ’17 reminded everyone that Landgraf’s pool access is only restricted for six hours each week, SAS unanimously agreed that the matter was ridiculous.

Vice President Alex Frumkin SC ’15 reported the week’s election results, including the election of Secretary Molly Fassler SC ’14 who frantically attempted to learn everyone’s names. Faculty-Staff Relations Chair Max Greenberg SC ’14 discussed a proposal that the college offer a writing major, and Judicial and Academic Review Chair Leah Soffer SC ’14 said that the English Department was discussing a subsidiary creative writing degree. Board members agreed, however, that creative writing is a far cry from proper writing styles such as journalism, and that a creative writing major might not attract student interest.
