ASPC Senate Makes Unprecedented $400,000 from Plant Sale
_x000D_
Just kidding. They only made $401.65 from their recent plant sale, but it’s not really a hugely impressive number so I exaggerated the headline to get you to read this.

Hide yo’ Kids, Hide yo’ Bongs

Ric Townes, Frank Bedoya and Piya Bose from the Office of Campus Life came to visit the ASPC Senate this week to explain alleged searches and seizures that may or may not have been happening on North Campus*. One of the only “funny” parts about this story is that every Senator on ASPC was aware that OCL was coming to the meeting to discuss RHS policy, but it certainly didn’t appear as if any of them had told their constituents (i.e., YOU), some of whom might have had a question or two for Townes, Bedoya and Bose (i.e., Dude, where’s my bong?). Maybe ASPC should consider publishing agendas for their open meetings? Just an idea.

Senators Emma Wolfarth PO ’14 and Darrell Jones III PO ’14 led the discussion, asking OCL to explain recent instances of what some students consider a breach of trust between Residence Hall Staff and other campus residents. Bedoya took the lead on this, saying that in certain cases, standard RHS protocol “has not happened.”

Voice of the People and Commissioner of Clubs and Sports Emma Wolfarth followed up with an issue regarding OCL expressed to her by Pomona students: that RHS policy has not been enforced evenly across the board. Commissioner of Community Relations Darrel Jones III seconded this statement, adding that OCL “has to provide a sound rationale, and so telling kids ‘You can’t do this just because’ is not sufficient anymore.”

After further discussion, Townes added that he thinks the ASPC Senate is the best forum for discourse between students and the administration when it comes to important issues such as this.
“Student governance is the central way to communicate with students,” he said.

We at the Briefs™ completely agree with this statement, and we hope to see a little more of the governance trying to communicate with students in the future. Seeing a random student observer at meetings every once in a while would be nice too. And while we’re at it, throw in a pony and a dream castle.

*Note: North Campus has not yet seceded from Pomona despite heavy encouragement from OCL.
