The Claremont Colleges Ballroom Dance Company held its first event of the semester, Kickoff Blues, on Friday, Sept. 10.

Edmunds Ballroom reverberated with the groovy tunes of blues music as veteran and novice dancers alike showed up for the event. Kickoff Blues, organized by the Claremont Colleges Ballroom Dance Company and Underground Blues, began at 8 p.m. and continued until midnight.

“The event went really well. Turn out was perfect. Energy was high, everything was organized, performances were great. Totally murked it,” event organizer Oscar Torres PO ’19 said.

The night started off with a one-hour blues lesson, led by Kirstin Tingle PO ’18 and Christina Fox SC ’17, in which students learned the basics of blues dancing: the basic step, the slow drag, and solo movements.

“My favorite dance move was the fishtail,” Sarah Grace Engel PO ’20 said.

Students were able to practice their dance moves during an hour of social dancing, when blues and pop music were played. Next came performances by ballroom dance companys tour team Underground Blues, Claremont Swing, Groove Nation, and more. More social dancing followed the performances from 10:30 p.m. to 12 a.m.

“I enjoyed meeting people from different colleges and grades,” Engel said. “It was really fun to dance with the members of the club and professional dancers because they knew what they were doing.”
