Amazon Labor Union President Chris Smalls, 5C union leaders speak on labor activism at ‘Americonned’ screening
The documentary “Americonned” screened at Pomona’s Rose Hills Theater on Feb. 29. Following the screening, a panel featuring Amazon Labor Union president and documentary subject Chris Smalls, director Sean Claffey and two local union organizers, Pomona dining hall worker Rolando Araiza and Pitzer dining hall worker José Ochoa, discussed workers’ rights and labor activism at the 5Cs and beyond. The documentary discusses Smalls’ success in establishing a grassroots movement and unionizing Amazon workers, fighting against a smear campaign and union-busting efforts from company executives. Smalls’ journey was situated in a broader context of income inequality.
From the Renaissance to Modern Art, new Benton exhibits celebrates the beauty of drawings through the centuries
Two new exhibits celebrating the art and history of drawing recently debuted at Pomona’s Benton Museum of Art: “500 Years of Italian Drawings” and “Infinity on Paper.” The former includes the sketches and designs of many celebrated Italian artists dating back centuries; “Infinity on Paper,” in contrast, is a collection of vastly different drawing styles and forms curated by the Benton Gallery’s AllPaper Seminar Fellows.
The Year of the Dragon: Across Claremont, students wrap dumplings, explore themed exhibits, and come together to celebrate the Lunar New Year
The Claremont community came together during Lunar New Year season to celebrate the upcoming Year of the Dragon. Some 5C events, exhibitions, and excursions that took place over the weekend of Feb. 9-11 included the CSSA (Chinese Students and Scholars Association) spring festival, language resident Manxi Wang’s dumpling making and Scripps’ Clark Humanities Museum “Year of the Dragon” reception.

Language residents, such as Anya Doglio (CMC), Alessia Griesi (Scripps), and Manxi Wang (Pomona), are integral to the 5C foreign language program and beyond. Residents go beyond teaching language conversation classes by hosting study breaks, cultural events, and leading language tables, making them vital resources for students interested in exploring different cultures and languages
Art beyond trauma: 79th Ceramic Annual exhibition reshapes narratives of brownness
The 79th Ceramic Annual at Scripps College’s Ruth Chandler Williamson Gallery explores the theme “The Idea of Feeling Brown.” Curated by Scripps’ Lincoln visiting artist in ceramics Jasmine Baetz, the exhibit features 13 artists who define narratives of brownness beyond trauma through augmented reality and performance experiences, while confronting the challenges BIPOC artists face in navigating the predominantly white ceramics field.
