World-renowned musicians Homayoun Sakhi and Salar Nader brought the music of Afghanistan and South Asia to Pomona College’s Bridges Hall of Music on March 5. Masters of the tabla drum and Afghan rubab, the duo’s technique and mastery presented a powerful cultural synthesis.

80th Scripps Ceramic Annual traces landscape of West Coast ceramics
Now in its 80th year, the 2025 Scripps College Ceramic Annual, “In the Hands of the Collector: The Fred Marer and Forrest L. Merrill Collections,” opened on Feb. 1. Curated by Nancy M. Servis, the Annual showcased the history of ceramics on the West Coast and at Scripps.
SCAMFest showcases 5C and SoCal a cappella groups
On the evening of Nov. 9, Pomona’s Bridges Auditorium drew back its curtains for the Southern California A Cappella Music Festival, known more commonly as “SCAMFest.” The annual event featured performances from twelve 5C a cappella groups, one dance troupe, Groove Nation and groups from UCLA, USC and UC Davis.
‘An evening with Pae White’: The artist behind CMC’s Qwalala
Pae White, the artist who created CMC’s public art installation “Qwalala,” spoke in a special reception “An Evening with Pae White” on the evening of Nov. 6. She spoke about the piece’s beginnings in Venice, Italy. She drew inspiration from the Venetian tradition of Murano glass work and Roman antiquities.
Voting Carnival sparks civic engagement ahead of 2024 election
The Voting Carnival, held on Oct. 9 on Parents Field, featured games, food and voter registration assistance to engage students ahead of the 2024 presidential election. Organized by Every Vote Counts Claremont, Kravis Lab and CIVES, the event aimed to educate students about voter registration and the absentee ballot process.
Sprinkles, stripes and stars at Insomnia Cookies
On the evening of Sept. 17, Insomnia Cookies in Claremont Village hosted its first National Pajama Party Night, where pajama-clad students and families waited in line for free cookies. Reviews of the cookies were mixed, with some praising the chewy texture and rich flavor, while others were less impressed. The event showcased classic cookie flavors along with seasonal options like pumpkin spice latte and Fruity Pebbles cereal milk.
Claremont is brat
“Brat” culture has hit the Claremont colleges. Scripps kicked off the semester with the first-ever 5C Brat Rave, celebrating Charli XCX’s album “brat” with neon lights, bubbles, and beats. “Brat” has transcended music and evolved into a lifestyle, representing bold self-expression, rebellion, and a carefree attitude. Brat has influenced campus parties, dorm decor, and even social dynamics, encouraging students to embrace their messy and authentic selves.
