For the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and Pomona-Pitzer track and field teams, the SCIAC Multi Dual at Whittier College March 31 was a major success. Both teams took on Whittier and Cal Lutheran University, and had many strong finishes.
The Sagehen men defeated Cal Lutheran 111 to 37 and Whittier 100 to 62 behind solid performances from jumpers Cal Neikirk PO ’19 and Ethan Hardacre PO ’20. Neikirk took first in the high jump, while Hardacre won the triple jump and long jump.
The P-P women fell to both the Regals and Poets, 89 to 70 and 95 to 63, respectively, but the team posted several impressive individual finishes. Helen Guo PO ’20 took two wins in distance races, dominating the 1500-meters and 5000-meters, while Vicky-Marie Addo-Ashong PO ’20 came in first in the 100-meter hurdles and the high jump. Guo’s 1500 time of 4:37.73 moves her to fourth in P-P history.
The CMS Stags and Athenas both swept Whittier and Cal Lu. The men won 96.5 to 65.5 and 113 to 36, respectively, while the women won 116.5 to 45.5 and 99 to 62.
The Stags were led by Ben Iten HM ’19, who won the the 800-meter race, and Reese Peterson HM ’20, who was victorious in the shot put and hammer throw.
The Athenas were aided by a record-setting performance from Emily Basset CM ’18, who won the shot put, discus, and hammer throw. Her performance in the hammer throw, 58.90 meters, set a new CMS program record, and is currently the second-furthest distance posted in Division III this year.
CMS and P-P will return to action Saturday at the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational.
