Pomona was buzzing with the rambunctious racket of various sports events on the east side of campus on Saturday, Apr. 2. Athletes in brightly-colored clothing jogged a 5K by the football field, music blasted from the baseball field, and cheers echoed from the Pomona-Pitzer track and field meet over at Strehle Track.
Saturday marked the SCIAC Track and Field Quad Meet, in which the P-P teams raced against California Institute of Technology and Occidental College. Both the men and women Sagehens placed second, defeating Caltech but losing to Occidental.
For the men, Calvin Aylward PO ’18 and Brandon Hull PZ ’18 dominated the field events: Aylward won javelin with a throw of 193-3 feet, while Hull took first in the pole vault with 4.09 meters.
Meanwhile, the men also swept the 5000 meter, taking first, second, third, and fourth, and John Fowler PO ’16 took first in the 1500. Marcus Polk PO ’19 claimed the top finish in the 100-meter hurdles, just before Cal Niekirk PO ’19 contributed a first-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles.
On the women’s side, Rhea Jayachandran PZ ’16 set the tone for the day with a win in the 100-meter hurdles at a time of 15.10, the third best in P-P history. Cat Banobi PO ’17 pulled ahead in the 400-meter dash to take first, and Maya Weigel PO ’17 blasted through the finish line in the lead with Kristen Hernandez PO ’18 following in third in the 800- and the 1500-meter run. Over at the long jump, Ailene Nguyen PO ’16 leaped 17-09.50 feet to out-hop the rest of the competition.
