CMS Stags Stay Perfect on the Tennis Court

CMS Tennis Shuts Down Caltech & Carnegie Mellon

 For the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men’s tennis team (7-0, 1-0 SCIAC) there’s no such thing as too much competition. On Sunday, Mar. 6, the no. 2 Div.-III-ranked Stags swept no. 40 California Institute of Technology (3-2, 1-1 SCIAC) 9-0. The victory featured stunning performances from before playing in the Pacific Coast Doubles tournament at La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club. Standout performances came from #1 doubles team Skyler Butts CM ’16 and Daniel Morkovine CM ’17, who defeated their Stanford competition 8-2.  Additionally, no. 2 doubles team Lestter Yeh CM ’16 and Glenn Hull CM ’17 also had a strong outing, with an 8-1 victory over Villanova. The teams fell 8-6 against Oklahoma State and San Diego State University in the second round, respectively. Duos Julian Gordy CM ’19 and Max Macey CM ’17 won their first round of play against an independent team but came up short against Oregon State University in the following match. Similarly, Avi Vemuri CM ’19 and Alex Brenner CM ’17 took down independent competition before losing to University of California, Irvine.   

Later that day, CMS continued its success with a 9-0 sweep over Caltech. Butts and Yeh led the charge in the No. 1 doubles with a quick 6-2, 6-0 defeat over Rushikesh and Joshi. The two also emerged victorious in their singles’ matches, as did Hull, Morkovine, Bryan Mehall HM ’16 and Oliver Seifert CM ’16. The Stags followed their successful weekend with a 6-3 win over Carnegie Mellon (8-5, 0-0 Conf.), which featured big singles wins from Morkovine, Macey, and Yeh. Additionally Julian Gordy CM ’19 had a standout performance, taking down Kunal Wadwani in an exciting three-game set to end the day on a high note. As they continue extend their win streak, it’s full-speed ahead for the Stags as they prepare for the Stag-Hen Invitational Mar. 11.
