Warren Leonard, the Senior HR Director and General Counsel of the Los Angeles Dodgers, is about to be involved in some serious legal proceedings after the team’s owners announced their intentions to sell the team. For concerned Dodger fans and future lawyers, it’s a relief to learn that Leonard will be on campus today to share his experiences with the Dodgers organization and the journey that led him there.
Leonard is one of four speakers presenting at the Sports Industry Day, an event hosted by the Claremont Sports Connection (CSC) that exposes students to different possibilities in the $400 billion industry.
“We hope to educate students on the vast amount of career opportunities available within the sports industry,” said Stephanie Goldberger CM ’12, CSC’s Director of Large Events. “[Students] can pursue a career in accounting, finance, broadcasting, graphic design, sales, marketing, and through the Sports Industry Day, the CSC aims to provide the career resources and connections needed to break into the industry.”
After the success of the inaugural Sports Industry Day last April, CSC decided to make the event annual. They planned the second installment to sustain the burgeoning interests of students looking for a career in sports. This year’s event features two segments: a three-hour short course session and career fair followed by a keynote discussion panel.
Ted Yeschin, Manager of Athlete Marketing at Wasserman Media Group, and Guy Genis, Founder and CEO of Eventmakers, are scheduled to appear during the first part of the afternoon. Wasserman Media Group is one of the largest agencies in the world, representing superstar clients such as Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard, Manchester United striker Michael Owen, Oklahoma City Thunder guard Russell Westbrook, and 2011 NBA Most Valuable Player Derrick Rose. Eventmakers is consistently listed in the Top 50 Event Planning Companies in the world, and they recently hosted the Smackdown v. Raw 2011 Video Game Press Event in Los Angeles.
During the second half of the event, Warren Leonard and Andrew Starke, Owner and President of the Palm Springs Power (a summer-league baseball team), will present a keynote panel to provide insight into the industry. Prior to his work with the Dodgers, Leonard, a Harvard Law School graduate, developed a sports-related reality show. Starke has witnessed incredible success within the industry, creating a league in which 60 percent of its players received offers to participate in MLB Spring Training.
President of CSC Harold Zyskind CM ’12 believes this event will allow students to seek out jobs and internships during the summer. He hopes to organize it every fall, to provide inside knowledge on how to succeed in the sports industry.
The Sports Industry Day takes place at Edmunds Ballroom today from 1:30 to 6 p.m. Questions about the event can be directed to ClaremontSC@gmail.com.
