Strong Second Half Sees Whittier Past P-P Football

In a game that was much closer than the final score indicates, the Whittier Poets surged past Pomona-Pitzer 58-27. Running back Luke Sweeney PO ’13 had a nice bounce-back performance with 246 yards, ensuring that he’ll be at the top of the NCAA rushing leaderboard for another week, while Whittier quarterback Matt Evans threw four touchdowns—three in the first eight minutes of the second half.

Sweeney led the Sagehens to a 20-10 lead in the middle of the second quarter, but two quick touchdown drives and some strong defensive plays put Whittier up 24-20 at the half. Quarterback Matt Evans began the third quarter by passing all over a deflated P-P defense, and a series of three-and-outs and turnovers by the Sagehen offense resulted in a 52-20 Whittier lead after the first play in the fourth quarter. Fullback Zach Tannous PZ ’12 ended Whittier’s 42-0 scoring streak with a rushing touchdown, but the Poets scored on the ensuing kickoff to seal the game. Sweeney’s 246 yards put him above 1,000 for the season and 2,000 for his career. Linebacker Justin Meng PZ ’13 blocked his second extra-point in as many weeks.

Sagehen Seniors will look to enjoy their final home game of the season as La Verne comes to Pomona for a 7:00 p.m. contest on Saturday, Nov. 5th.
