More than 80 area middle school students visited Pomona College on Feb. 1 to participate in a wide range of sports and activities as part of the National Girls and Women in Sports Day. Students came from Fremont Academy in Pomona and Serrano Middle School in Montclair to celebrate the event, whose theme this year was, “Be active and play, 60 minutes, every day.” The Pomona College Draper Center’s outreach group, Pomona Partners, served as photographers and chaperones, and more than 70 Pomona-Pitzer female student athletes and coaches led the girls in shooting hoops, learning about strength training, and playing lacrosse, table tennis, and playground games. The day also featured a talk by the state senator Norma Torres, who shared her experience coming to the United States from Guatemala as a five-year-old. She encouraged the middle school students to work hard and believe that they can achieve great things.
