The Pomona-Pitzer softball team defeated Menlo College in both games of a double header on Saturday, by final scores of 1-0 and 6-5. The Sagehens then fell to University of Redlands on Sunday in a double header that was postponed from two weeks ago due to rain. They lost 7-1 and 8-0.
With the win against Menlo, things are looking up for Sagehen softball, as this is the first double header this season that they have swept. In the first game, P-P scored one run in the second inning and the pitching staff kept their opponents scoreless through all nine frames. The run came from Pomona sophomore Carolyn Cross, who hit a double and was then helped home by a double from Kathryn Rabak PO ’13. Cross also pitched the first game and did not allow any runs, making sure that her one run was enough to earn them the victory.
The second game was neck-and-neck until a clutch RBI from Jamie Goldberg PO ’11 got the final run in the eleventh inning to give the Sagehens a 6-5 victory. After giving up a few runs in the fifth, the Sagehens bounced back, boasting an impressive sixth inning that featured a home run from Brianna Marcantoni PZ ’12. Her home run brought in two runs and tied the score. Three pitchers—Cross, Marilyn Creswell PO ’14, and Caitlyn Hynes PO ’14—combined for the win.
The team struggled against Redlands, which is ranked ninth nationally. The only run came when Arianna Roach PZ ’12 scored on a Marcantoni hit in the first inning.
Today, the Sagehens face Swarthmore in a double-header starting at 1, and tomorrow the team will play Occidental at noon and 2.
