Sagehens Start Season Strong vs. Brandeis, Whittier

The Pomona-Pitzer men’s tennis team started its season this week by defeating Whittier College and Brandeis University, with both matches resulting in scores of 8-1.

The Sagehens travelled to Whittier last Saturday and, despite two rain delays, managed to win soundly. The team got off to a solid start, winning all three doubles matches. The men continued their dominance in singles, winning five of six matches. Max Sabel PZ ’13 won his matches at #2 doubles and #5 singles.

“I’m really proud of the way our guys persevered through all sorts of things that happened—a couple rain delays, the lights went out. But we were able to pull through handily,” Sabel said.

On Wednesday night, the Sagehens battled Brandeis in a match that started at 6 p.m. and went until 11 due to a rain delay. Despite the hold-up and chilly 45 degree temperature, Brandeis posed no trouble for the Sagehens. The match began with wins in all three doubles spots. At #3 doubles, Chris Weichert PZ ’14 and Alex Groth PO ’12 quickly finished their match, winning 8-1. The #1 doubles team of Tommy Meyer PO ’12 and Frankie Allinson PO ’13 defeated Brandeis’s top team 8-3. At #2 doubles, Uday Singh PO ’12 and Sabel pulled out a close 9-7 victory.

The match continued with singles play. Tommy Meyer, at the top spot, won his match easily, 6-3 6-2. Weichert, Sabel, and Nick Tagliarino PZ ’11 won their singles matches as well. At #2 singles, Uday Singh fought a long battle, winning in three sets. His match went on late into Wednesday night, but the hour proved to be no obstacle to his supporters, as the entire team stayed out to cheer him on.

Groth attributed much of the team’s success to its unity.

“I think this year we’re playing really well as a team, and that’s making a big difference,” he said.

This Saturday the Sagehens face SCIAC opponent Cal Lutheran in an away match, and on Monday they play Mary Washington University at home.
