Pomona College has identified and banned two 5C students from Pomona’s campus as part of an ongoing investigation into a recent disruption at an Oct. 7 memorial hosted by Claremont Hillel, according to a statement from the President’s Office. The other two students involved in the disruption have not yet been identified.

Pomona College President Gabrielle Starr emphasized the severity of the disturbance following an anonymous statement that was sent to multiple campus publications by individuals claiming responsibility.

“Given the gravity of the alleged offense — and the published statement that has raised significant concerns about similar disruptions in the future — I have initiated an interim campus ban for both individuals, pending further inquiries, and in line with our policy,” Starr wrote.

She added that the anonymous statement was “filled with threatening, dehumanizing and antisemitic language,” and stated that such sentiments “have no place” at Pomona.

The statement from Pomona did not disclose which colleges the identified students attend, though it did state one of the 5Cs has identified the students as their own.

“After confirming that neither is affiliated with Pomona, we have worked with our consortial partners, and one of them has positively identified both individuals as its institution’s students,” Starr wrote.

Any further disciplinary action for the students involved will be handled by the students’ home campuses, according to the statement.

“Pomona hopes for — and will advocate for — an outcome that ensures our campuses are free of the kind of targeted harassment we witnessed on October 15,” Starr wrote. “In parallel, we are redoubling our efforts to identify the remaining two individuals.”

This is a developing story and will be updated as information becomes available.
