Your Cells on Stress: Scripps Dean Elaborates

Scripps College’s Associate Professor of Biology Gretchen Edwalds-Gilbert spoke Oct. 7 in Malott Commons’ Hampton Room,
discussing the ways in which cells deal with chemical stress. Sponsored by the
Alexa Fullerton Hampton ’42 Endowed Speaker Fund, the lecture was part of
Tuesday Noon Academy, a collection of free presentations by Scripps faculty and
visiting scholars. Edwalds-Gilbert, who is also an associate dean of faculty,
touched most on the chemicals to which people are commonly exposed, including
food preservatives BHA, BHT and BPA, now banned from most plastic bottles.
She recently performed experiments in her lab demonstrating an important
response activated by BHA and BHT.
