TSL named ‘Best Newspaper’ by the California College Media Association, wins 17 awards

TSL took home 17 awards at the California College Media Association conference in its category of colleges under 15,000 students, with six first place, three second place and eight third place wins. (PJ James • The Student Life)

On March 8, The Student Life took home 17 awards from the California College Media Association’s (CCMA’s) annual conference, which recognizes achievements in student journalism across the state. 

TSL was evaluated in its category of colleges under 15,000 students and won six first place, three second place and eight third place awards. The paper received honors in several categories, such as “Best Newspaper” and “Best Breaking News Story.”

TSL won multiple awards for multimedia and social media at last year’s CCMA conference; this year, TSL continued to stand its ground as a forerunner in multimedia content, placing for “Best Podcast” and “Best Interactive Graphic.” The paper also established itself as an online presence, taking the title of “Best Social Media Reporting.”

Best Breaking News Story for Ben Lauren, Ansley Washburn, June Hsu and Annabelle Ink’s coverage of the student arrests at Alexander Hall

Best Editorial for Ben Lauren, Willa Umansky, Maya Olson, Samson Zhang, Juliette Des Rosiers and Frances Walton’s op-ed, “You can’t silence us: A united front against Pomona’s repression”

Best Social Media Reporting for Ben Lauren, Ansley Washburn, Elena Townsend-Lerdo, June Hsu, Annabelle Ink and Adam Akins’ coverage of student arrests and activism

Best Photo Illustration for Sasha Matthews’ graphic in “OPINION: 5C students should ditch the 1-10 ‘hotness’ scale”

Second Place:

Third Place:

Best Interactive Graphic for Dania Anabtawi’s data piece, “The 5Cs Class of 2028 by the numbers.” Members of TSL’s data team — Brecken Enright, Unity Tambelini-Smith, Tommy Matheis, Preston Kwon and Evelyn Hao — also contributed to the data work on this piece.
