Pomona BSU town hall calls for administrative accountability amid incidents of racism
After increased incidents of racism on campus, Pomona’s Black Student Union convened with community members on March 25 to host a town hall, aiming to chart a path forward and bring attention to incidents of racism reported across academic and social spaces in recent months. BSU leadership listed out multiple demands, ranging from greater accountability mechanisms to more transparency, arguing that a failure of enforcement on campus is leading to ongoing harm for Black students on campus.
Pomona College names democracy and human rights leaders as commencement speakers
Pomona College announced last month that California Supreme Court Associate Justice Goodwin Liu, humanitarian Jane Olson and political scientist Daniel Ziblatt PO ’95 will speak at the College’s commencement ceremony on May 17 on Marston Quad. During the ceremony, the speakers will receive honorary doctorates recognizing their contributions to law, human rights and democratic governance.
5CEJ Field Day draws student support for renewable energy switch at the 5Cs
After garnering student support and attention at its far-reaching field-day, 5C Environmental Justice (5CEJ) met with the Claremont Colleges’ Business and Financial Affairs Committee (BFAC) on March 5 to lobby for a consortium-wide transition to renewable energy sources, while Claremont McKenna College’s student body voted that night to support the campaign.
Though BFAC’s decision is still pending, if approved, the proposal will advance to a consortium-wide presidents committee for final consideration.
In addition the field day showcased sustained student interest, as their proposal advances through the institutional review process, according to Hope Dragseth SC ’28, the 5CEJ outreach lead on the campaign’s working group.

Pomona Professor of English Prageeta Sharma joins efforts with the Claremont Lewis Museum of Art in “She Opens the Door: Women Artists and Writers Shape Language and Space,” curated by Chloe Martinez, poet-in-residence and Claremont McKenna lecturer in religious studies. Combining poetry and various mediums of art, the exhibition gathers artists from Claremont and the greater Los Angeles area who challenge inherited ideas of ‘women’s work,examining how women’s labor and craft has been devalued as art and work.
Amid Claremont housing crisis, 5C students support tenant protection efforts
Claremont housing advocate groups tabled outside of Frary, Malott and Collins dining halls last week, collecting signatures for a tenant protection petition and registering students to vote in the city’s Nov. 3 election. The groups’ outreach corresponds with ongoing debate over Claremont’s housing policy, which remains unsettled.
A taste of home, right here at the 7Cs: Inside the Annual International Festival
On Feb. 13 from 12:30 to 2 p.m., the second floor of Roberts Pavilion hosted “The World Meets at 7Cs,” a festival organized by the International Student Community Programming Council. With booths representing more than 30 countries, the event featured traditional foods, music and cultural displays, giving international students the opportunity to share aspects of their home countries while inviting the broader 5C community to engage with them.
Chau Vu ’26 becomes Pomona’s first CRA Outstanding Undergraduate Researcher
Chau Vu PO ’26 was selected for the 2026 Computing Research Association Outstanding Undergraduate Researcher Award last month for her research in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI). Vu is the first Pomona College student to receive the distinction and the only awardee from a liberal arts college this year.
For Vu, the CRA award demonstrated that meaningful research can happen in a liberal arts setting. She attributed her national recognition to both her technical skills and her breadth of education.

KGI PhD student’s startup wins $40,000 Westly Prize for harm-reduction innovation
Farid Manshaii KGI ’28 received the $40,000 Westly Prize for Young California Innovators on Jan. 26 for his health technology startup Recalivape, a harm-reduction system designed to help people quit vaping. The competition for the award, run by the Westly Foundation, receives over 100,000 applicants and grants three unrestricted prizes to early-stage founders building social-impact ventures. Looking ahead, Recalivape plans to launch a clinical study in the coming months as part of Manshaii’s doctoral research. He emphasized that the company’s direction remains unchanged.
