Behind The Claremont Independent: Its origins, funding and wider impact

The Claremont Independent (The CI) is the only 5Cs student publication that receives funding exclusively from outside sources, instead of from the schools. Earlier this year, the newspaper’s coverage of pro-Palestine action on campus was cited by a letter sent by The U.S. House of Representatives’ Committee on Education and the Workforce to Pomona College demanding student disciplinary records related to alleged “occurrences of antisemitism.” Given The CI’s national spotlight, this article seeks to go behind the publication. It reviews their funding sources, national affiliations, and origins in the 1990s to illustrate the CI’s political significance both on campus and beyond.

Mapping the history and future of the BDS movement with Shaheen Nassar’s presentation of “Beyond Recognition”

On Oct. 7, the two year anniversary of the Israel-Hamas war, several organisations including 7C SWANA hosted guest speaker Shaheen Nassar, a member of the “Irvine 11,” for a talk at the Motley Coffeehouse titled “Beyond Recognition.” Over 100 students crowded into the Motley at 3pm to listen as Nassar detailed the historical context for the current situation in Gaza, and spoke to other issues including the Boycott, Divest, Sanction (BDS) Movement.

Through sludge, injuries and rainy days 5C ski and board club found the podium in two events at the U.S Collegiate Ski and Snowboard Association National Championships in Lake Placid, New York the week of March 4. Women’s freeski, anchored by a strong core of three first years, locked down gold while women’s freestyle snowboard took bronze, rising above varsity teams across the country.
