The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps baseball team (13-8, 4-2 SCIAC) was busy over spring break, winning three of four games in the past week.
The Stags were coming off a tough series loss to the University of La Verne the week before, but were able to turn things March 9, when they faced Ursinus College (2-7) in a doubleheader at home.
CMS took the first game 13-7, as the offense exploded to lead the team to victory. Chase Eller CM ’19 brought the power for the Stags, hitting two home runs and adding an RBI double in three at bats, driving in six. Cameron Cash CM ’20 continued his strong campaign on the mound, pitching six innings to secure the win.
The second game of the twin bill was no different than the first, as the Stags continued their offensive barrage, this time winning 24-12. Eller remained on fire, going 3-4 with another home run and six RBIs. Brandon Mitchell CM ’21 added two home runs of his own, and CJ Novogradac CM ’19 tacked on another moonshot.
Pitching was a team effort for CMS, with six different Stags taking the mound in the victory. Konnor Kwok CM ’20 started on the mound and pitched three innings, and Brandon Louie CM ’20 picked up the win in relief.
The Stags kept rolling March 12, taking home a 9-7 victory against Dickinson College (3-11). The offense erupted for eight runs in the first three innings, and the Red Devils couldn’t climb out of the early hole to overtake CMS.
However, the afternoon ended on a sour note, as CMS couldn’t complete the week undefeated, falling 4-2 later in the day to Ithaca College (7-5). For as much offensive firepower as the Stags had shown, the bats fell quiet in the matchup with the Bombers, and they failed to rally in the late innings to get the victory.
Justin Hull CM ’20 took the hard-luck loss, pitching six innings of four-run ball, but couldn’t get the run support he needed from his teammates.
The Stags will be back in action March 23 as they open a weekend SCIAC series against Occidental College (12-8, 6-3 SCIAC).
