On Saturday, the Athenas lacrosse team (9-1, 5-0 SCIAC) faced the Colorado College Tigers (11-2, 0-0) on their home turf to pull out a 15-11 victory. A well-coordinated defense and an aggressive offense were both keys to CMS success during the game.
The team’s offense was led by Lauren Clubb CM ’18, who racked up four goals and three assists throughout the game. Emily Cohen CM ’20 also put four goals up on the board, and Allie Hill CM ’20 was responsible for three of the Athenas’ 15 points as well as two assists.
CMS opened with a goal by Clubb, but Colorado College quickly retaliated with two of their own and went up 2-1. The Athenas quickly responded with four goals in six minutes to take control of the offensive game.
Coach Lauren Uhr commented on their aggressive play, writing in an email to TSL that “our teamwork through transition really stood out to me and I was proud of our fast break offense as well as our tenacity on the ride.”
“We prepared and watched video on the game plan that Colorado College has been working on; however we really focused last week on our game and on the details,” Uhr wrote.
It was a close game in the first half as the Tigers ramped up their defense and scored two more goals on the offense, slicing the Athenas lead to just one. This is where the Athenas showed their strength in transitions, moving seamlessly between offense and defense to score two more goals before the end of the first half, going into the latter half of the game with a lead of 7-4. CMS pulled their defense together to create turnovers and make stops, and relied on a few clutch saves from their goalie Sara Reid CM ’20.
The two teams were well matched, and the second half of the game was just as exciting as the first. The Athenas continued to battle to maintain their lead, and they secured their victory with six minutes to go when Corie Hack CM ’19 scored to create a five-point lead.
This win adds another notch to the Athenas’ already extremely successful season. They have dominated SCIAC play this year, owing their success to their dedication both on and off the field. Uhr wrote that she has been “proud of our team for continuing to push each other and the accomplishments we make at practice. Practice is where the strength and depth of our team pushes us forward.”
Even with their outstanding record, the Athenas are always focusing on bettering their game. Their “goal for the rest of the season is to take one game at a time and improve every time we hit the field,” Uhr wrote.
The Athenas will face up next against the Redlands Bulldogs on April 8 at 1 p.m.
