Big Series Leading in to Final Week

Last weekend, Pomona-Pitzer Baseball showed that they aren’t finished with their season yet as they took on California Institute of Technology Friday, Apr. 22, and Saturday, Apr. 23. The Sagehens run-ruled Caltech all three games, leaving no doubt as to who was in command.

On Friday, the Sagehens kept the Beavers scoreless for the first four innings while they went on to score 14 runs with homeruns from left-fielder Bryce Rogan PO ’18 and first-baseman Cade Hulse PO ’18. In the fifth inning, Caltech got their first run across the plate before Kevin Brice PO ’16 threw a laser back to catcher Kevin Jordan PZ ’17 from right field, hosing the second runner trying to come across.

In the sixth inning, the Beavers seemed to settle in to offense, scoring six runs on five hits and two errors before the Sagehens were able to lock down their defense and finish out the inning.

Seeing Caltech close the gap was enough for the Sagehens to look for some insurance. In the final two innings, P-P was able to plate three more runs to finish off the game.

On Saturday, the Sagehens got off to a bit of a slower start than the day before, falling to the Beavers 3-1 by the end of the third inning. The Sagehens’ bats finally came to life in the top of the fourth inning, scoring eight runs to give P-P a 9-2 lead over the Beavers. By the seventh inning, the Sagehens were looking to finish the game. With three batters in a row hit-by-pitch, the Sagehens plated their tenth run of the game. Then, with a walk from Tanner Nishioka PO ’17, SAC fly from Simon Rosenbaum PO ’16, and single from Hulse, the Sagehens were able to take down Caltech 13-3.

In the final game of the series, the Beavers had no more life remaining. The Sagehens again jumped on their lack of energy, scoring an astounding nine runs in the first inning off of seven hits and three errors.

In the fifth inning, the Sagehens continued to extend their lead with a big homer from Rosenbaum, giving the Hens a 13-0 lead over the Beavers. The following inning, P-P kept it going with a triple from Nishioka and a SAC fly from Rogan, putting three more runs on the board.

In the bottom of the sixth, Caltech tried to close the gap, with a two-run homer from player Garrett Levine. After the home run, the Sagehens made two errors, putting runners in scoring positions and allowing the Beavers to plate two more runs.

In the top of the seventh inning, it was time for the Sagehens to really finish out the series strong. With a single from Brice and two consecutive double from Nishioka and Rogan, the Sagehens were able to score the last 4 runs needed to shut the Beavers out.

With the last week of the season winding down for the Sagehens, seniors Kevin Brice, Simon Rosenbaum, and Billy Morales PZ ’16 are looking to finish strong. All three seniors will be recognized Saturday, Apr. 30 in their final home games of their careers with the P-P Baseball team.
